Caloocan residents offer free meals to Nazarene devotees

MANILA – Dozens of residents from Bagong Barrio, Caloocan City
gave away free meals to devotees of Black Nazarene during the

They said it is their act of devotion to the Nazarene for more
than a decade.

“Kasi nakikita namin nagugutom, walang nagbibigay ng pagkain.
Kaya naisip namin na bakit hindi na lang kami magbigay ng
pagkain para maibsan ang gutom nilang lahat?” Nonet Acoba, 54,

Before they used to hand out bread and chips until others
chipped in.

“Konti pa lang ‘yung pinamimigay naming pagkain. Pero habang
tumatagal, andaming nagbibigay, kaniya-kaniya kaming dala, may
taga-ibang bansa na nagbibigay,” she said.

They used an owner-type jeep to place the food beside the San
Sebastian Church in Manila. Aside from rice meals, they also
gave porridge, pizza, and water. 

Rico Galvez and his wife Aura were among the major contributors
of their project.

Rico, a former village chief, said his devotion to the Nazarene
stemmed from his desire to overcome his drug addiction. 

Because of his vices, Rico said he failed to become a good
father to his 8 children from different women.

His wish to the Black Nazarene this year? His son to overcome

“Kaya ito pinanata ko, siguro may awa ang Panginoong Diyos na
baka mabago. Kasi sa amin, binago ko ang sarili ko, baka ‘yung
mga anak ko madala sa pagbabago,” he said.

The group wore a shirt emblazoned with the Nazarene’s image.

Written on the back is, “Happiness doesn’t result from what we
get, but from what we give.”
