MANILA – Monday’s elections brought about the downfall of some political clans, but the Garcias of vote-rich Cebu, one of the province’s prominent families, showed they are here to stay.

The Garcia household fortified their grip on power after scoring big wins in their respective electoral races.

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Garcia, who is the incumbent congresswoman of Cebu’s 3rd district, is heading back to the province’s Capitol.

Backed by President Rodrigo Duterte, Gwen decimated her closest competitor by more than 280,000 votes to secure the governorship.

According to the latest partial and unofficial results in the 2019 midterm elections, Gwen obtained 884,926 votes while Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale got 596,937 votes.

Gwen has served as governor from 2004 to 2013 and went on to become a congresswoman for 2 terms.

The Ombudsman earlier ordered Gwen disqualified from holding public office for grave misconduct over the purchase of the P98.9-million Balili property in Naga City in 2008.

The Court of Appeals, however, reversed the anti-graft body’s ruling last week, allowing her to proceed with her candidacy.

Taking over Gwen’s spot is her brother Pablo John or PJ, who won Cebu’s 3rd district against John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña with more than 50,000 votes.

PJ previously served as representative of the same district from 2007 to 2013. He ran as governor in 2013 and congressman in Cebu’s 7th district in 2016, but lost in both races.

Also victorious in the midterm polls is Gwen’s brother Marlon, who was seeking reelection in southern Barili town.

Gwen’s daughter Christina was also reelected as mayor pf northern Liloan town. Christina’s husband Duke, meanwhile, won the congressional race in Cebu’s 5th district against Red Durano.

The Garcia clan fielded brother Nelson in Cebu’s 7th district, but failed to resonate with voters. He was defeated by rival Peter John Calderon by more than 30,000 votes.

In Cebu City’s political scene, Gwen’s nephew, Raymond, was reelected as councilor of the city’s north district.
