MANILA – It’s hard to disassociate Lea Salonga from her Disney princess image, being the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan.
But she believes this can sometimes pose a risk to children of parents who don’t do their research before buying tickets to a theater show.
Salonga made the statement over the weekend, requesting audiences to not bring their young children to her new musical “Sweeney Todd” which will be staged in Manila and Singapore.
The Tony Award winner noted that “Sweeney Todd” tackles themes that are “very adult” such as rape, cannibalism, revenge, murder, and obsession.
“This is not a Disney show at all,” she stressed in an Instagram post. “Although the minimum age is 12, that would depend on the maturity level of your child. My 13-year-old flat out refuses to watch this as she has a hyper-vivid imagination.”
“Please, please, please, I implore you to do your research,” she added.
Salonga plays the role of Mrs. Lovett in Atlantis Theatrical’s “Sweeney Todd,” which also stars Jett Pangan and Nyoy Volante.
The musical’s Manila leg will run from October 11 to 27 at The Theatre at Solaire in Parañaque City.
